When sleep problems last for months

Chronic insomnia means trouble falling asleep, staying asleep or getting back to sleep at least three nights a week for three months or longer. Night work, rotating shifts and changing family schedules can make the problem harder to manage. CBT-I can be adjusted to the schedule you actually have.

Falling asleep

You are tired all day, then alert as soon as the room gets quiet.

Staying asleep

You wake at two or three and spend the rest of the night checking the time.

Shifting schedules

Your work hours move, and your sleep never has time to settle before they move again.

Sleep apnea causes pauses in breathing during sleep and often includes loud snoring. It can occur alongside insomnia. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.

This is the current California list. We check your benefits before the first visit, and self-pay is available if your plan is not listed.

What happens at your first appointment

The first appointment is about fifty minutes on how your nights go, how long the problem has lasted, what you have tried and whether anything besides insomnia is involved. If CBT-I matches your needs, you track your sleep each morning for about two minutes. Your clinician then sets times for bed and waking. The plan is reviewed weekly for six to eight visits. Some patients improve in the first few weeks. Learn more on the how it works page.

You must be physically in California during each session. Continue with Los Angeles, San Francisco and the whole state. There is no San Diego office; the nearest practice address is 650 California Street, San Francisco, CA 94108, and nearly all San Diego patients are seen by video.

Three things San Diego patients want to know

Does video insomnia treatment really work from San Diego?
Yes. Sessions focus on your sleep record, schedule and habits. Those steps can be reviewed on a video call. Set aside about fifty minutes in a private place with a reliable connection. The practice office is in San Francisco, not San Diego.
Can I join a session while I am outside California?
No. You must be physically in California during the appointment. You can join from a private place anywhere in the state. If you will be outside California, you need to reschedule.
I snore and may stop breathing. Should I book a San Diego sleep study instead?
A sleep study is an overnight test that measures breathing and movement, while insomnia is diagnosed from your history and sleep pattern. Sleep apnea and insomnia often occur together. We treat the insomnia, we have partners who treat the apnea, and our clinician coordinates any referral that is needed.
